MEET JAIME AGNEW

LEGAL BACKGROUND

Jaime has been an active attorney in Lucas County for nearly 17 years. She recently rejoined the Toledo Legal Aid Society (TLAS) as an Assistant Public Defender. Until December 2023, Jaime served as a Senior Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio under Attorney General David Yost. Before that, she was a Magistrate in the Toledo Municipal Court from 2018 to 2023, presiding over civil claims, criminal, and traffic dockets. During her tenure as Magistrate, Jaime also represented the 6th District on the Ohio Association of Magistrates (OAM) Board and maintained her civil law practice at Agnew Law Office, LLC.

Before her appointment as Magistrate, Jaime primarily worked as a solo practitioner at Agnew Law Office, LLC. She also served as an Assistant Public Defender Attorney, focusing on representing youth in the Lucas County Common Pleas Juvenile Division and occasionally representing clients in the adult system. Jaime litigated Permanent and Temporary custody cases, served as an Attorney/Guardian Ad Litem (Attorney GAL) for children in Children Services cases, and represented adults in family law matters in Juvenile Court. Additionally, she handled cases in the General Division Court, including Divorce, Dissolution, and Criminal Defense, and was licensed to represent clients in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 Bankruptcy in the Northern District of Ohio.

Early in her career, Jaime worked as an Associate Attorney for a large statewide bankruptcy firm and as a paralegal for a large Workers' Compensation and Personal Injury Firm. Her extensive experience spans multiple areas of law, having represented clients in various municipalities and the General Division Courts of Lucas County.

EDUCATION

Jaime's first paying job was as a legal intern in the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, primarily serving in the Juvenile Division. Before that, she was an unpaid legal intern in the same office, having been placed there as a Reinberger Scholar during her second year at the University of Toledo College of Law, a distinction she is very proud of. In addition to being a Reinberger Fellow, Jaime was awarded the Women's Bar Association scholarship in her third year of law school and was a quarter-finalist for Moot Court. She also was the runner-up in the National Online Dispute Resolution Competition on behalf of UT Law.

As an undergraduate at the University of Toledo, Jaime graduated with a B.S. in Biology. During her freshman year, she was the Patricia Ann Sullivan Scholar and participated in the Leadership UT program for all four years. This scholarship program brought her to Toledo, and she found it so valuable that she turned down a track scholarship at another university.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Jaime is originally from East Liverpool, Ohio, where she graduated 10th in her class of nearly 300 students. She served as President of her class all four years of high school and received the Female Student Athlete of the Year Award at graduation for her achievements in basketball, volleyball, and track, where she still holds the school record for the 100M hurdles. Jaime was also on the debate team for four years, choreographed and danced in all four high school musicals, and was a distinguished member of the National Honor Society.

She is married to her high school sweetheart, Aaron, and together they have two amazing sons and three cool dogs. They took custody of her brother when he was only 9 years old, and he now has a beautiful baby girl, making Jaime and Aaron (technically) very proud grandparents.

Jaime enjoys civic and community service. From 2018 to 2023, she supported various charity projects through the OAM Board. One of her most memorable volunteer experiences was working as a “hugger” at the Special Olympics. Recently, she and her Campaign Crew volunteered at Acoustics for Autism, an event supporting Project iAm, and they look forward to helping annually with this worthy cause.
